Evolution Era: 1801 - 1828

It was an era of discovery and expansion when the nation negotiated the Louisiana Purchase of 1803 and embarked on exploration of the country with the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The country was evolving and constructing transportation routes via roads,  canals and the railroads. New cities sprang up along the way and Henry Clay developed the 'American System'. The contentious issues between the Free States & Slave States were subject to debate. The period ended with the Era of Good Feelings. The leaders of America who were elected president during the Evolution Era were Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe and John Quincy Adams.
