an effort to keep the United States from being drawn into a foreign

America made efforts to
remain impartial. However, events made it impossible to maintain its neutral policy.
The nation was drawn into World War 1 on the side of the
Allies 2½ years after the
conflict had begun, and declared war on Germany on April
6, 1917. America joined the Allies in
World War 1 due to the following causes
● The immediate cause was that Germany
violated American neutrality by attacking international shipping
with its unrestricted U-Boat submarine warfare campaign
● Other causes of WW1 in America included:
○ The sinking of the
Lusitania
passenger liner
○ Acts of sabotage in America including
the Black Tom Explosion
○ Breaking the
Sussex Pledge that led to
the sinking of six American merchant
ships by German U-boats
○ The interception of the
Zimmermann Telegram that promised the Mexican Government that Germany
would help Mexico recover the territory it had ceded to the
USA following the Mexican-American War
