Summary and Definition: The World Trade Center Bombing occurred on February 26, 1993. Six people were killed and more than 1000 people suffered injuries after the 606kg bomb, that had been planted under the 2 World Trade Center in New York City, exploded shocking the world and beginning the US War on Terror. The name of the man who led the bombers and organized the 1993 World Trade Center Bombing was Ramzi Yousef who stated that the reason for the bombing was to avenge the sufferings Palestinian people had endured at the hands of U.S.-aided Israel. The 1993 World Trade Center Bombing marked the beginning of a string of threats and terror attacks against the United States made by both foreign and domestic terrorists that led up to the second bombing of the Twin Towers during the series of 9/11 terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

The Plan: Ramzi Yousef's plan was for the bomb to collapse the 110-storey North Tower skyscraper building at the World Trade Center complex and for debris from the North tower (1WTC) to knock over the South Tower (2WTC). The twin towers were massive, each weighing more than 250,000 tons, containing 99 elevators and 21,800 windows. His goal was to kill tens of thousands of people.

World Trade Center Bombing Facts - 9:The Bomb: Urea nitrate, a fertilizer-based high explosive, was used as a detonating device, was used as the bombís base and cylinders of hydrogen were used to increase the magnitude of the explosion. Although Urea nitrate is a severe explosion hazard it is stable until detonated.

The Bomb: The explosive was surrounded by magnesium, aluminum and ferric oxide particles. Three tanks of bottled hydrogen were placed in a circular configuration around the main explosive, to enhance the fireball of the solid metal particles.

Ramzi Yousef and Eyad Ismoil parked the van at the B2 sub level of the public parking garage beneath the World Trade Center in Manhattan, New York. Ramzi Yousef ignited the 20-foot fuse which gave the terrorists 12 minutes to get out of the building.

The bomb at the World Trade Center Bombing exploded at 12:18 p.m. The explosion destroyed the 15 ft long, 1.5 in thick steel cross bracing, cracking the adjacent column, and bowing the bracing on the other side of the column. Without the bracing  and column supports, the concrete floors on the B1 level, and the floor under the car (B2 level) collapsed.

The scene of the bombing was chaotic, numerous cars were crushed and in flames, walls and ceilings collapsed and the pipes containing electrical wiring went down. The twin towers lost power and, as a result, people were either trapped in elevators or in dangerous, dark, smoke filled stairwells.

The bomb opened up a 98 foot hole in the concrete, but it was not enough to bring the North tower down. The effect of the blast eventually left a crater 200 feet by 100 feet wide and 7 stories deep.
